Despite its name the Wincanton Branch of Parkinson’s draws its membership of some 140 members (and growing!) from a wide area embracing North Dorset as well as neighbouring parts of Somerset and Wiltshire.
A theme of Parkinson’s UK is ” you do not need to face Parkinson’s alone.” Groups like ours exist to supply support to people with Parkinson’s and carers alike. A chance to discuss mutual problems. And above all to relax and enjoy ourselves.
The Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 2:30pm at the delightful Charlton Musgrove Village Hall. We usually have a speaker or some from of organised activity followed by tea and cakes and a chance for a chat and socialising.
There is no charge for membership though we urge members to also join Parkinson’s UK which is well worth its £4.00 annual subscription.
The Branch organises gym sessions at Fitness by Design, Gillingham. These are specifically for people with Parkinson’s and carers are equally welcome and encouraged to come along.
We also organise an hour’s Tai Chi class on Mondays from 12:30 at the Balsam Centre in Wincanton. Again this is for people with Parkinson’s and their carers.
We helped Pavilion Dance from Bournemouth devise Dance for Parkinson’s classes. these involve excercise and movement to music under the leadership of specially trained instructors. Apart from the benefit of excercise they are also fun and uplifting! They are now organised and funded by ArtsLink in Sherborne and take place every Thursday from 2:30 at the Youth Centre, Tinneys Lane in Sherborne.
